As drivers hit the road to celebrate a three day weekend for Labor Day, thousands of Americans are at work, some of them are working for minimum wage. In North Carolina, that means $7.25 per hour.

According to an April Elon Poll, most North Carolinians would prefer for the minimum wage to be $10 per hour.

According to the National Employment Law Project, the top minimum wage employers are Walmart, YUM! Brands and McDonald's.

The minimum wage varies in each state. In New York, minimum wage is $8 per hour and in Washington, the minimum wage is $9.32 per hour.

President Obama has proposed raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. Senator Hagan is in support of this, but her US Senate opponent, Thom Tillis, is not. According to Tillis, raising the minimum wage could drive up costs and take away jobs.
