Old City Fire Station Reopens After Burning Down

Posted: Updated:

A fire station in Old City went up in flames, almost a year ago.

Since then firefighters have been serving its community while based out of another location.

But not anymore, they're back home tonight, and ready for action again.

These massive flames left the fire house on 4th and arch badly damaged, closing the historic Old City station for almost a year.

15-year-ladder two veteran John Rivera remembers seeing his home base up in smoke as he returned from training last September.

"It threw us off. As a matter a fact, shocked. We jumped right in to service and did as much as we could, but it was pretty far in," said Rivera.

The nine person unit worked from another station about one mile away while ladder 2 underwent repairs.

They're happy to be back in their old digs.

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says having ladder 2 back will help response times around the 4th and arch area of old city.

"I believe it was always safe, but having a company right here is going to make community members feel safer because this is their station," he said.

Having the station down the street back open has nearby businesses feeling more secure and excited.
