NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Time Warner Cable suffered a nationwide outage primarily impacting its Internet service on Wednesday morning. More than 11 million customers were affected.
Several hours later, NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered an investigation into the outage.
"I have directed the New York State Department of Public Service to investigate this outage as part of its review of Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner. The Department will also review whether the outage affected Time Warner's provision of telephone service in any way," said Cuomo.
The problem occurred during routine maintenance of Time Warner Cable's Internet backbone, the paths that local or regional networks connect to in order to carry data long distances, reported the Associated Press.
“Today's widespread internet outage that has apparently impacted more than 11 million customers at Time Warner – which is based in New York – is a stark reminder that our economy is increasingly dependent on a reliable broadband network. That is one of the reasons why I pushed for a stronger standard of review for cable company mergers earlier this year.
Outages occurred from East to West coast.
The company said the problem affected all of its markets and started at 4:30 a.m. and was largely restored by 6 a.m., and updates continued to bring all customers back online.
Time Warner Cable, which is in the process of being bought by rival Comcast Corp. for $45 billion, has about 11.4 million high-speed data subscribers in 29 states nationwide.
"The Department will also review whether the outage affected Time Warner's provision of telephone service in any way. In addition, the Department will include its analysis of this event in its ongoing study of the telecom industry, which is exploring potential changes to the regulatory landscape pertaining to telephone, internet and cable," said Cuomo.
On Tuesday, the Federal Communications Commission said Time Warner Cable, based in New York, would pay $1.1 million to resolve outage reporting violations.

More than a decade ago, Heather Greene was a musician doing the thing that a lot artists do in New York: creating, recording, playing, touring but never quite breaking through. Then in 2005, an opportunity to move overseas -- Scotland, to be exact -- would end up changing the course of her career -- and life. We asked her some questions. Here are five of them. (Plus her answers.)

An autopsy has ruled the death of "60 Minutes" correspondent Bob Simon to be an accident. The New York City medical examiner says Friday that Simon died from blunt-force injuries to his head, torso and extremities and had fractures. Police say Simon was not wearing a seatbelt Wednesday night when the car he was riding in collided with another vehicle on the West Side Highway in Manhattan. The law does not require livery car passengers to wear seatbelts.
