Pike Nurseries: Gardening in small spaces

Posted: Updated:
Sometimes less can be more! A small space shouldn't limit your garden or your imagination—hanging baskets, containers, window boxes, espaliered fruit trees….they're all great ways to made a big gardening impact – even on the most limited high rise balcony!  Here are some considerations and expert techniques when planning your small garden.

·         Start with a Plan – Planning is key to a successful small garden

o   Measure your space and consider what you have room to plant

o   Pay attention to the lighting where you will be planting

o   Consider how you would like to use your garden

·         Maximize Your Garden – Always look for opportunities for your garden to make the most of the space you have

o   Plant a vertical garden--building up rather than out

o   Choose your plants wisely according to your space.

·         Start Planting – Your small space garden may be planted mainly in containers, directly into the ground or both

o   When planting in containers, use Pike Potting and Container Mix and a small amount of E.B. Stone Sure Start

o   When planting in the ground, amend existing soil with Pike Planting Mix and add E.B. Stone Sure Start

·         Tie it Together – Consider a color scheme for your pottery so that your garden looks unified and try to align plants from short to tall to keep your garden from looking cluttered

·         Bring the Outside In – Gardens aren't just for the outdoors. Decorate your home with houseplants and succulents to further maximize your garden!
