Police Investigate Alleged Anti-Semitic Attack At Temple University

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Police say a Jewish student and a group of students involved with a pro-Palestinian group had a run in that ended with one person sent to the hospital.

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reports.

It was supposed to be a day of excitement for Temple students moving into their campus dorms; however,on Pollett Walk things turned testy when police say a Jewish student and members of the Students for Justice in Palestine exchanged words.

“There was a series of verbal altercations that took place and at one point, one student struck another student,” said Temple spokesman Ray Bettzner.

Police say the Jewish student claimed anti-Semitic remarks were made and he was punched in the face. Samantha Pinto of Students for Justice in Palestine claims things got heated when the Jewish student made some comments.

“He started telling us we were idiots, we were terrorists, that we were supporting terrorism,” she said.

Pinto says two Palestinian students standing at the table, who are not members of SJP, took issue with the comments.

“One of the young men, who isn't an SJP member, got really upset and ended up slapping him in the face. He didn't punch him like some reports have said,” said Pinto.

Michael Wildes, a New York lawyer for the Jewish student, says police let the student who allegedly attacked his client go home. He called that unacceptable. He also was concerned how universities are going to handle these issues. He said his client will cooperate fully with police.

“We've asked him to come back in because we'd like a deeper conversation with him. We're looking for the person he identifies as the one who hit him,” said Bettzner.

In the meantime, Temple condemned the violence and any anti-Semitic comments that may have been made.

The student who claimed he was attacked told a student newspaper police let his assailant go after the incident. Police say they hope to talk to both sides again.

One of the most surprising findings in a report from the New York City public advocate is that city officials have virtually no authority over how nail salons are run. The city can't enforce standards like they do with restaurants, so it's clearly a case of beauty buyer beware. We get our nails done without thinking too much about it.
