Gov. Snyder's reaction to flooding: Is it because it's an election year?

Posted: Updated:
Do you think this had anything to do with this being an election year?

It appears that Gov. Rick Snyder had a quick change of heart when he decided to personally survey the humongous flood damage to the freeway system in Metro-Detroit this week.

He was on tour in the Upper Peninsula when the torrential rains temporarily turned the freeway system into the state's 6th Great Lake. At 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday he was asked by the WWJ NewsRadio 950 anchor if he was coming to Detroit.

"Actually at the moment, I'm in the Upper Peninsula," he confessed. The anchor noted that the U.P. was not that far from Motown.

The governor did not say he would leave but said instead, "The more important thing is we have people on sight acting to take care of the situation."

But something sure happened between 8:15 and 11:15 when a fixed winged state airplane touched down at Capitol City airport, and who deplaned?

Yep. The governor who promptly advised capitol scribes, "I'm just here to mention to you that we'll be making a tour of the damage down there", as he reassured everyone he was on top of this.

Shortly there after he boarded the state police chopper and made a personal tour of the damage and it just so happened that he also got his face on the evening news demonstrating to all the voters...err, motorists in southeast Michigan that he was on the job.

"It showed leadership," reflects GOP political consultant John Truscott who knows a thing or two about advising governors during natural disaster. He once worked for former Gov. John Engler.

On this governor's decision to leave the U.P.?

"You have to be there. You can't phone it in...There are a lot voters and a lot are ticked off people if you are not solving the problem for them," he suggests.

Nobody bothered to ask the governor about the political implications of his decision but you can just imagine what the Democrats would have said had he decided to stay put in U.P.?  Think along the lines of Caesar fiddles while Rome burns.

The executive office has a different take contending there was nothing political about the decision at all. It reports that after the morning radio interview additional damage data came and then he decided it was time to make a personal review. "It was the right thing to do," indicates his media secretary Sarah Wurfel, however she does concede that everything the governor does has political implications. To be sure.
