Hall of Shame: Viewers help disabled victim get new ride

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -  The good news is Fox 2 viewers are awesome.  I put a bad guy in the Hall of Shame and some of the good people of Metro Detroit stepped forward to help out.

In June I introduced you to a lady named Arlene.  She needed a van. so her friends decided to hire a professional to throw her a fundraiser.

The professional talked a good game but the guy turned out to just be lame. He took their cash and Arlene was left without wheels - except on her wheelchair.

But now, she's got a nice van complete with hand controls so she can hit the road.

It is sad to think someone would take advantage of a single mother with a disability. I put that 'someone' in the Hall of Shame.

Now our viewers have put the lady in the wheelchair behind the wheel of her own van.

How long has it been since Arlene drove her own van?

"Oh my God, it's been so long, a couple years," she said.

This is Arlene's first drive in her new van. After getting ripped off and cheated I let this nice lady go wherever she wanted - even if her driving is a little rusty.

A new van was donated by some nice people after seeing my Hall of Shame story on a not-so-nice person.

Arlene's specially-equipped van had been ripped off and she was without transportation.

On a recommendation on a co-worker, a friend contacted someone who called himself Kenard LaJuan to organize the fundraiser.

He agreed to set up the fundraiser but first she had to pay $200 but then put her off for months telling her he was a "busy business man."

After months of waiting, Arlene contacted me on Facebook to check the guy out. I found out he wasn't quite the mogul he presented himself to be.

In fact his real name was Kennard LaJuan Williams and he had been in trouble before for promising things he couldn't deliver.

Police say they're investigating a large brawl that broke out at the end of a wedding reception held over the weekend at a suburban Buffalo country club. Officials tell local media that seven different police agencies were called in late Saturday to break up the fight at the Orchard Park Country Club. Officers say dozens of the approximately 200 guests were involved in the melee, which broke out after a member of the wedding party was tossed off the premises for inappropriate behavior.
