Fatal boating accident in Greenwich

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM - Police have identified the girl who was killed in a boating accident in the Long Island Sound near Greenwich, Conn.

Emily Fedorko, 16, of Old Greenwich and three other girls, ages 15-16, were boating and tubing Wednesday afternoon when the tube flipped over and the girls were thrown into the water. Fedorko and another girl were struck by the propeller of the boat as it made a turn to pick them up, said police.

The girl operating the boat and the passenger lifted the injured girls out of the water and brought them to a dock at Old Greenwich Yacht Club in Greenwich Point Park.

Greenwich Police and the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are investigating the incident, but at this time police are calling it a "tragic accident."

The girl who survived was treated at Stamford Hospital for a soft tissue injury to her leg, police said. She needed extensive suturing.

"Our thoughts and prayers go the victim, her family, and her friends," said Lt. Kraig Gray, the department's public information officer.

Fedorko was going to be a junior at Greenwich High School, according to the AP.

The Greenwich Public Schools is offering grief counselors at two locations:  Eastern Middle School and the Greenwich High School from 11:00 a.m.-  3 p.m.

School officials say if anyone is feeling in the need of counseling and cannot make it to either site, please call 211 or the Center for Hope at (203) 655-0547.
