Voters in the tri-county area were asked to decide the future of the SMART bus system at the August 5 primary election.

If approved, the millage would provide the bus system with an additional $27 million to help modernize its fleet.

Without the new funds the system says it will have to shut down next year.

Seventy percent of SMART riders rely on the bus to get to work. The millage would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about an extra $50 per year.
