Police Report Arrest In Pennypack Park Murder Case

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Police say a passerby walking her dog along Pennypack Park in Northeast Philadelphia around 6:12 a.m. on Tuesday morning found the body of a missing mother of two.

Police now have made an arrest.

More details are set to be revealed during a news conference set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday at police headquarters.

“Manner of death was strangulation,” said Homicide Captain James Clark in a press conference on Wednesday.

That was the word from homicide investigators on the death of 46-year-old Connie McClain-Murray, identified by those who knew her from her Facebook page. The medical examiner determined she had been murdered.

“Obviously, there's a killer in that area. We're going to do everything we can to find him and bring him to justice,” said Captain Clark.

The mother of two was found in the woods inside Pennypack park. According to authorities, she was wearing running shorts, a tee shirt and sports bra.

Murray went out for a walk or jog Monday night around 9 p.m. and never returned home. Her husband and daughter searched for her and filed a missing persons report around 2 a.m. Four hours later a woman walking her dog found the body.
Murray lived on Tolbut Street just off the back of the park. She and her family were members at a local swim club located just down the block. Homicide detectives searched the park again on Monday night.

“I do have detectives running down a lot of leads. And a lot of tips that have come into the Homicide Unit,” said Captain Clark.

The murder has stunned the Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood and has many who use the park looking over their shoulders with a killer on the loose.

“If you're running late at night, always have somebody with you. If you don't have to run at night, run during the day,” said Captain Clark.

Police say the victim's cell phone and pair of headphones are missing.

Philadelphia Police Special Investigations Unit has taken over this case. They are looking at what FOX 29 is told multiple surveillance videos that may show Connie Murray in the moments before she was killed. Police confirm that she stopped to talk to someone in a car shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday night.

“We see her speaking to someone in a vehicle for a couple seconds and the vehicle pulls off,” said Captain Clark.

Investigators also say that while Murray was not sexually assaulted they did recover DNA that they hope will lead to her killer.

Crime scene investigators poured over the scene at Pennypack Park again on Friday. They cleared bushes and brush to uncover any new evidence.

“Right now, no one has been labeled as a suspect,” said Captain Clark.

As detectives were following leads and tips on Friday, the reward climbed to $50,000, including $10,000 from the Philadelphia Parking Authority where Murray's brother Kevin works.
