Suspect arrested after fatal carjacking in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A man suspected in a fatal carjacking Tuesday morning in Detroit has been arrested.

Police say a man was carjacked at Oldtown and Edsel Ford Freeway. The 68-year-old victim was found dead on a nearby porch with a head injury.

Police say witnesses overheard the suspect ask the victim to drive him to the west side of the city. Witnesses say when the victim declined the suspect struck him in the head with an unknown object and drove off in the victim's vehicle.

The suspect was arrested after a barricaded gunman situation on Ford Street, near Linwood Avenue and Oakman Boulevard.

The standoff ended with a wanted man in handcuffs on Ford Road near Lasalle and Linwood.

Witnesses saw police flanked by U.S. Marshals Service and Wayne County sheriff deputies take the man down.

The suspect, a hispanic man in his 30's, is believed to have stolen a Ford F-150 on Detroit's eastside and killed the owner, a 68-year-old man.

Investigators say the two knew each other.

Police say the incident began at a house on Oldtown Street near the I-94 freeway. The suspect wanted the victim to drive him to the eastside but he refused.

The two got into a scuffle and the suspect pushed the elderly man who fell and hit his head.

Once he got there initially, it became a barricaded gunman situation.  But he soon decided that he would give himself up and face the charges.

He will be charged with homicide, aggravated assault and possibly robbery.
