School Board Election Results In No Nominations

Posted: Updated:
Hunterdon County, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

What if we had a school board election and nobody ran? Well that seems to be the case in Hunterdon County where there are no candidates for more than a dozen school board seats.

The Hunterdon County Clerk, Mary Melfi, explains why no one is running for the school board at the moment.

"They get beat up all the time ya know, I mean, I've never heard anybody say, ‘oh I love my school tax I'm so glad they spend that money’, ya know?" she said.

Comparing the numbers of elections in other school districts, including Delaware Township, Alexandria, Bloomsbury, and Clinton Glen Gardner, they all are reading "No Nomination Made".

"You get nothing, you get nothing, zero, zip! It's an unpaid elected position," Melfi explained.

Other board members from other districts have strong opinions on this subject and expressed how a lack of interest in applying for the school board makes a statement. This is what some of them thought.

"If nobody’s willing to step up and take responsibility for the administration of that school and being in charge of the administrators of that school then it’s kind of sad," one board member said.

"If nobody wants to apply for the position then it’s not a desirable board to be a part of," another member of the board added.

Melfi stated that she gives free classes on how to seek elected office and has done this for years now. In the first year, it was well attended. However, in recent years that's not the case. The interest in the school board has lessened drastically.

In fact, Melfi approached the county’s youth to see if they are interested in applying. It turns out they are interested in voting and being a part of this political system, but they want different ways to vote such as on their iPads or cell phones.

Over the years, Melfi has noticed that school districts with debates over school topics bring out the candidates. On the other hand, in a peaceful county it's hard to find people to run!

If nobody's stepping up to these positions, what's going to happen? Someone has to do it, right?

We all know smoking is bad for you, but shouldn't it be your choice to have a smoke or not? A new law in Sayreville, New Jersey will now limit the sale of cigarettes only to people 21 years-of-age or older. While this law was passed with the intention to help reduce the number of teenage smokers, all its really done is anger convenience store owners and drive away customers.
