Puppy who ate rat poison recovering after close call

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Little Reeces had a very close call. He ate rat poison last week and four days later was on the brink of death.

The pup has recovered, and he's happy and healthy.

Reeces can now barely contain his excitement, but just a few days ago this lab-mix nearly died after eating rat poison.

"It really, truly, is amazing that he pulled through," said Dr. Leo Egar.

Dr. Egar saved his life.

"It had taken effect, and he had a chronic nosebleed, it had been going on for a number of hours, and he had lost most of his blood. He didn't have the ability to clot his blood anymore due to the effects of the poison," said Egar.

The owners of the 13 week-old pup turned him over to one of the Humane Society's Emergency Animal Medical Technician's. Apparently Reeces threw up the poison, so they didn't seek treatment, but a neighbor called for help because Reeces continued to bleed.

"It was very desperate at that point, really it's one of those instances where you either intervene or realize that the animal is going to expire right in front of you," he said.

Egar administered vitamin K to support Recces's ability to clot blood, along with the antidote to the poison, and a blood transfusion. Egar hopes this is a reminder to keep poison away from pets.

"And that goes for any toxin, as well as pesticides, herbicides, chocolate, human medications, which you may have. Keeping those as isolated from your pet as possible is the most important thing," said Egar."

Egar says if your dog eats any of those you need to take them to a vet. Reeces will be fostered for a few weeks as he continues to recover, but we'll let you know when he goes up for adoption.

Police say they're investigating a large brawl that broke out at the end of a wedding reception held over the weekend at a suburban Buffalo country club. Officials tell local media that seven different police agencies were called in late Saturday to break up the fight at the Orchard Park Country Club.
