Pike Nurseries: Keeping beautiful Hydrangeas

Posted: Updated:
Looking for plants that add fresh color to the garden? Here are some easy ideas that use new varieties of old favorites--the hydrangea and azalea—that bloom from now until fall!

Hydrangea Paniculata
Hydrangeas are such a classic, gorgeous addition to any garden. Paniculata is a wonderful variety to add beautiful color and more.

  • Does well in some sun; ideal location would be morning sun with afternoon shade
  • Blooms on new wood, late in the season, so you get flowers from now until frost.
  • Wide variety of sizes from 3’ to 30’!
  • Makes a great cut flower, and dries well
  • Great it all styles of gardens, ranging from containers, to Cottage to a formal setting.
Popular varieties include:

  • Tardiva – fast growing variety with white blooms that fade to pink as they age. Grows 8-12 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide.
  • Limelight – has lime-green flowers that age to a rosy-mauve. Grows to be about 6-8 feet tall and wide.
  • Little Lime – smaller variety. If you love the green flowers of Limelight, but don't have the space to grow it, Little Lime is a great substitute. It also has lime-green flowers that fade to pink. Grows 3-5 feet tall and wide.
  • Vanilla Strawberry – newer variety that has become very popular for its dramatic swing from bright white to a rich strawberry-pink color as the blossom ages. Grows to be 6-8 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide.
  • Strawberry Sundae – the little sister of Vanilla Strawberry and is brand new this year! Like Little Lime, it's a great smaller hydrangea for smaller spaces. It is a dense shrub and becomes covered in blooms.  Grows to be about 3 feet tall and wide.
Encore Azalea
Azaleas aren't just for spring anymore! If you look around in late summer and fall, you will see azaleas blooming again. The Encore Azaleas and the newer Bloom-a-Thon azaleas both bloom in the spring and re-bloom in the summer and fall.

  • Are more sun tolerant: they bloom best with 4-6 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Evergreen, they add interest to the garden year round
  • Low maintenance
  • Wide variety of colors and sizes
  • Flower on old and new growth, so they bloom in spring and fall
