'47 Heisman winner Lujack recovering from surgery

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (Associated Press) - Johnny Lujack's granddaughter says the former Notre Dame and Chicago Bears star is in good spirits after spinal surgery.

A spokeswoman for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, says the 89-year-old former quarterback was doing "very well" Thursday. Amy Flanagan says her grandfather is in good spirits.

She said he had spinal stenosis that was causing numbness. She said he was brought from Genesis Medical Center in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa, to the Mayo Clinic by helicopter on Monday and had surgery Wednesday.

Lujack led Notre Dame to three national championships even though his time on campus was interrupted for two seasons while serving in the Navy during World War II. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1947, and played four seasons for Chicago.
