Falcons open training camp with 'sense of urgency'

Posted: Updated:

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - The Atlanta Falcons have opened training camp with what coach Mike Smith calls "a sense of urgency."

The Falcons are looking to bounce back from a 4-12 record, the first losing season of Smith's six-year tenure.

Smith says he wants to see more intensity from the very first day of training camp. He liked what he saw on Friday.

The Falcons were also encouraged to have star receiver Julio Jones back on the field after he missed most of 2013 with a foot injury. Jones will only practice every other day through the first two weeks of camp as a precaution, but the team is counting on him being at full speed when the season opens.

Getting Jones back is especially important after the retirement of right end Tony Gonzalez.
