Romulus teen dies after crashing car during police chase

ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) - An 18-year-old man is dead after a police chase ended in a crash. The chase ended on Beverly Street in Romulus.

"An 18-year-old who has got the rest of his life in from of him, it's very tragic what happened and we're very sad for the family," says Romulus Public Safety Director John Leacher.

Romulus police say just after 1 a.m. Thursday an officer noticed a car parked on Fourth Street sitting near a home the officer had been keeping an eye on.

"That residence had received multiple threat complaints as well as a vehicle owned by one of the residents had all four tires slashed within the last couple days," says Leacher.

The officer got out of his cruiser and approached the parked car to see what it was doing there.

"He asks the gentleman to step out of the vehicle, the gentleman refuses and then just speeds off on the officer," Leacher says.

Speeding down Fourth then turning onto Beverly with police close behind, the car lost control, veered off the road and crashed into a utility pole. The driver, not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.

"The young man's father said to me, 'Why would he run from the police?' And we said the same thing, we don't know. It doesn't make sense why he would do that," says Leacher.

No one else injured.

Crews were out fixing the pole Thursday afternoon. Police say although the teen has been arrested before they don't believe he was connected to the threats.

The question of why he was running may never be answered.

"This is the last thing that we as a police department ever want to see is something like this happen to anyone," Leacher says.

Police say they're investigating a large brawl that broke out at the end of a wedding reception held over the weekend at a suburban Buffalo country club. Officials tell local media that seven different police agencies were called in late Saturday to break up the fight at the Orchard Park Country Club.
