Woman Shot By Homeowner In Long Beach Was Not Pregnant

Posted: Updated:
Long Beach, CA - UPDATE: Coroner says Andrea Miller, shot by homeowner in Long Beach during burglary, was NOT pregnant.

(FOX 11 / CNS) An 80-year-old homeowner said today he chased and fatally shot one of two people who broke into his Bixby Knolls residence.

The homeowner, Tom Greer, told news media outlets the two people, a man and a woman, were inside the residence when he found them Tuesday night. Greer said the couple ran from the house.

"The lady didn't run as fast as the man, so I shot her two times," Greer told news media outlets. "She says, `Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant. I'm going to have a baby'. But I shot her anyway."

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Tuesday in an alley by Greer's residence, in the 3900 block of County Club Drive.

A videographer at the scene said the female suspect had been taken to a hospital after the shooting.

Broadcast footage showed Greer with his right arm in a sling. Media outlets reported that he had been hospitalized for injuries to his shoulder and collarbone.

Greer told the media he shot the woman as a deterrent to the male suspect. "I shot her, so that's going to leave a message on his mind for the rest of his life," Greer said.

Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department said information about the shooting would be released Thursday.

From Gigi Graciette:

The signs of Tuesday night's break in are visible from the street.

The front door of the home on Country Club Drive hacked at - the wood pried off near the locks.

Evidence of a break-in that ended when the 80-year-old homeowner shot one of the intruders dead.

That intruder, a woman, he says asked him not to shoot her because she was pregnant, telling him "I'm going to have a baby. I'm pregnant. Don't shoot"

But he shot anyway.

Twice. Killing her on the spot.

He also said he shot at her male accomplice who ran away, leaving his partner in crime behind.

According to the homeowner, he shot at them after the couple attacked him when he found them trying to open his safe. After they knocked him to the ground, he says, he managed to grab his .22-caliber revolver.

As for any regrets, the outspoken senior citizen says he has none. On the contrary, he hopes the shooting, death and all, sends a strong message to the robber who got away.

While many of his neighbors on the quiet residential street say they understand and support what he did to defend himself and his home.

Long Beach Police are still investigating the case.

As for the dead woman, the LA County Coroner has not yet identified her and were unable to tell me if she was indeed pregnant, as she claimed.
