DPD's 6th precinct struck by bullets in drive-by shooting

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police say bullets struck the 6th Precinct building during a drive-by shooting. This was the same precinct where four officers were shot back in 2011.

Detroit police Sgt. Marcellus Ball was working late this weekend. "I had some assignments to do and my desk is seated right next to the window," he says. "I happen to look out the window and I saw a car coming down as I usually do, but this time the car slowed up."

That's when the officer heard several blasts.

"And the next thing I heard was several shots being fired and I saw multiple muzzle-flashes," says Ball. "I took cover and hit the floor."

No one was injured in the shooting. No broken glass was strewn about so it appeared no damage was done.

"Several people heard the shots in the station because it was quite loud and everybody ran out to see exactly what was going on, and by the time we got outside the vehicle had sped off," he says. "Later on, we lifted the blinds and did a through search."

That's when the bullet holes were exposed. Police spotted three, though none of them penetrated both window panes.

"We have copy cat criminals; we have criminals who just don't care; we have criminals out here who carry it as a badge of honor to shoot at a police or shoot at a police station or hurt someone," says Ball.

Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt detailed what happened after the incident at the Plymouth and Warrick precinct.

"We put it out right away to let everyone know that, hey, there's a possibility of a guy with a gun in the area, so we all went to high alert," says Dolunt. He says when that takes place police take extra precautions.

"I'm taking more precautions and I'm going to make sure, that you're not the guy that's going to shoot me," he says.

What occurred here July of 2014 instinctively took these two men back to January of 2011 when four police officers were shot inside the same precinct after a civilian came in with a gun. Both Dolunt and Ball were there.

Sources tell Fox 2's Andrea Isom they believe the shooting was premeditated.
