Video: Gunman robs Birmingham gas station

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (WJBK) - It happened when one gas station employee least expected it and in a town many never suspected it would.

A lone gunman robbed a gas station at the corner of east 14 Mile and Pierce roads in Birmingham around 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

Nadeem Owais was working behind the counter a the time..

"When he came in I was frozen. I didn't know what to do," Owais remembers.

Surveillance cameras captured the moment a man wearing a mask and a dark hoodie stormed into the store and charged the counter with a semi automatic gun in his left hand. He struggled to climb over the counter, yelling at the employee to get on the ground.

"He pointed a gun and told me to get on lay on the ground. So, I did what he told me do and he jumped to my side from the counter and took the money," says Owais.

With Owais lying face down, the silver-haired suspect laid his gun on the counter while he managed to get as much money out of the register as fast as he could.

Video in Fox 2's Taryn Asher's report shows how he appears to be trying to find a way to break into the safe, but to no avail. He cuts his losses and runs out the back door.

The terrifying ordeal is all too familiar for Raed Fares, who has been robbed before, but never here and he says they will not be exposed like this again.

"I'm sure customers love to come in and see a decent place to come to, no glass, it feels safe, but what can a guy do? I mean, we want to please the customers but our lives are now being threatened," says Fares.

The two employees say they didn't recognize the suspect, but believe he knew what he was doing.

No one was injured.
