A 54-year-old man died after being hit and run over by multiple vehicles Friday night in northwest Indiana.
About 11:30 p.m., a 48-year-old Michigan woman was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox in eastbound Interstate 80 lanes, east of the Clark Street overpass, when a passenger in her car yelled that there was someone walking in their lane, according to a preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police.
The woman braked but couldn’t avoid hitting the man, later identified as 54-year-old Charles Maguire, authorities said. Maguire landed in the left lane, where he was run over by multiple unknown vehicles.
He had been walking across the eastbound lanes, from north to south, before he was hit, police said.
Maguire, of the 3000 block of Ralston Street in Gary, was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. Saturday. He died of blunt force trauma, but the manner of death was still being investigated, the Lake County Coroner’s office said.
Lanes were closed for about four hours before being reopened, police said.
