Woman caught stealing money from donation jar

Posted: Updated:

Police need your help finding a woman who stole donations meant for a local man’s future.

Next to the cash register at the Finders Keepers Consignment shop in Avondale Estates, is a single jar where customers can toss their spare change or a dollar or two.

The money is for an employee, Kanu Bartuah.

Bartuah fled Liberia when he was just a child and spent 10 years at a U.N. sponsored refugee camp before coming to America. Bartuah is studying to be a pilot so he can do missionary work, flying medical supplies and food into other countries.

One afternoon the store's surveillance video captured a woman walking into the store and snatching the money from the jar.

“It infuriates me because this is a young man who has seen a lot of atrocities, and 45 dollars is a lot to him and his future,” said store manager Betsy Johns.

Bartuah says he doesn't understand why anyone would take money from a donation jar, but he says if he ever meets the woman who took the cash, he'd forgive her.

“I believe in second chances, I've had a lot of second chances, maybe she needs one too,” said Bartuah.
