Police crack down on early cruisers

Posted: Updated:
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - It attracts more than a million people every year. The Woodward Dream Cruise is still more than a month away according to the official website. But, cruisers in classic cars are already here and police are cracking down.

We saw classic car owners hanging out Saturday night on Woodward and Normandy in Royal Oak. They say cruising is not a crime. But, one month before the Dream Cruise may be too early. They say they're noticing a crackdown, more police and more tickets for early cruisers.

Although Royal Oak police could not comment, nearby businesses tell Fox 2 Friday and Saturday nights they've had to call police because of all the noise and parked cars blocking access to their businesses.

Classic car owners who congregate in the area say they saw 10 drivers pulled over within two hours getting tickets for things like having an overly loud exhaust or an unsafe start. Some nearby businesses say the cruisers boost sales, others complain they're taking up too much space. Drivers say they understand why police are keeping a close eye -- but they also say most cruisers are just enjoying the ride and are not here to cause trouble.

The actual Woodward Dream Cruise is August 16th.

The U.S. Open is underway in Queens and there's no denying that many of the players, both men and women, are in great physical shape and know how to play that up. Women are particularly promoted in the industry as attractive, fashionable and fiercely competitive. Does that help the game and draw more people in?
