Southwest suburbs hit hard by Saturday morning storm

Saturday’s storms dropped two to four inches of rain in some spots around Chicago.

Streets were flooded, basements filled with water, and people in southwest suburban Burbank are still cleaning up.

“The whole neighborhood is ruined, again,” Linda Waszcuk said.

Basements, garages and even living rooms were left completely flooded in Burbank after rain came pouring down Saturday morning.

“It started around five in the morning and probably didn’t stop until 10. It was pretty heavy, heavy downpours,” Alex Avalos said.

As the streets filled up, reaching up to two feet of water in some spots, the water had nowhere to go but inside of people’s homes.

“Terrible rain, it’s coming down too fast. The sewers aren’t working and Burbank should fix that because it’s costing me a lot of money. This is the fourth time my house has been flooded,” Waszczuk said.

One driver was hoping to make it across the road, but he got stuck and flooded his car. A good Samaritan across the street came to the rescue and helped the father and son get to dry land.

“This street always floods and these poor people get flooded every time and these big trucks come through and cause tidal waves and it creates even more damage, unfortunately,” John Hercog said.

As neighbors tried to start cleaning up, some say this is a recurring problem with a solution that is long overdue.

“There was already much more damage than there should have been,” Hercog said.
