Arlington officer adopts pit bull he rescued

Posted: Updated:
Arlington, TX - An Arlington police officer has stepped up again to help a lost pit bull.

The story of how Sgt. Gary Carter first helped a dog named Jeffrey went viral last month.

The Arlington Police Department said he was out on a call when some residents told him about an "aggressive" pit bull that was chasing them around. One lady yelled, "This dog is so vicious, please get him."

The officer said he realized the dog was extremely friendly. He coaxed him into his patrol car and began trying to find his owner.

Animal control officers did find eventually find Jeffrey's owner, but that person brought him back to the shelter recently.

Jeffrey was scheduled to be euthanized later this week.

Sgt. Carter didn't let that happen. He officially adopted Jeffrey on Thursday and changed his name to Chance. He believes he can give him a second chance on life.

"This dog keeps crossing my path so it must be meant to be," he said.

The original post about incident on APD's Facebook page got millions of views. Many people thanked the officer for not automatically responding with his gun drawn.

APD said it developed a training program to help prevent officers from "profiling" certain dogs generally considered dangerous.

"He's a good dog," said Carter. "I mean, he came out…once he got through being hyper from being penned up for two or three days, he laid down right at my feet and did pretty much what he was asked."

Sgt. Carter got a nice surprise after the adoption - K9 International has stepped up to provide free obedience training to Chance.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
