Color Festival in Charlotte Honors Hindu Holi Traditions

Posted: Updated:
Thousands of people showed up at the Color Festival in Charlotte.

It’s all an extension of the Hindu festival of Holi.

Here people could do some yoga, meditate and throw color at each other.

It’s all about learning to let go.

Viral Mehta showers his family with love.

“It’s fantastic. It’s truly an experience. It’s such a mix of backgrounds out here,” said Mehta.

Mehta says this festival helps preserve his cultural roots.

“The origins of the festival are from Holi in India.  It’s the Festival of Colors. It’s amazing to see it here,” said Mehta.

Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates the beginning of spring and the harvest season.

“Even the kids are having a blast – they are having this exposure to our culture,” said Mehta.

The popularity of Holi now extends beyond just South Asia.

One way to honor the tradition is with a color run.

But on Saturday, the community celebrated a different way.

“This festival is a big way for people to come together and letting go of any negative feelings,” said organizer Lanny Langston.

“I haven’t seen one person frowning - everyone is smiling. I love the vibes out here,” said Danielle Eldarani.

“It’s one world – countries aren’t segregated and cultures are mingling. It makes me happy to see my kids and their friends who aren’t Indian learn about it,” said Mehta

It’s a colorful celebration that’s now making waves across the globe.
