9-Year-Old Dies From Rare Water-Born Brain Infection

Posted: Updated:

SPRING HILL, KS- A nine-year-old girl in Kansas is dead from a brain-eating amoeba.

Health officials say Hally Nicole Yust, passed after she contracted the amoeba from swimming in several different bodies of water over the last two weeks.

The vibrant and loving young girl died on Wednesday from a rare infection.

"You are more likely to die from drowning than you are from ever dying from this organism, it's like a one in a billion, this girl's one in a billion," said Hally's father Shon.

"One in a billion" is how people who knew nine-year-old Hally, describe her.

It must have been a little boring in heaven the last few weeks so God looked around the earth and he found the most interesting, dynamic, fantastic person he could and he said Hally you've gotta come be with me," mother Jenny Yust remarked.

Hally loved playing basketball, water skiing, and fishing, and she never settled for 50% effort.

"Anything she did, she was going to be the best at it. She came home from school one day and said Parker I beat every single kid in the class, and I said that's great- but what about all the boys- she said, yeah, the boys as well," said her older brother Parker.

Just as Hally was fearless in so many ways, her family asks others not to fear the amoeba that killed their angel.

"Our family is very active in the water, and we will continue to be," her father said.

And they are determined her young, but full life will not be in vain.

A celebration of life will be held for Hally on Monday.

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
