Coalition proposes ballot referendum to investigate 9/11

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New Yorkers may have the opportunity to open an investigation into the collapse of 7 World Trade Center on 9/11.

The NYC Coalition for Accountability Now (NYC CAN), an organization comprised of 9/11 victims, first responders and family members, presented a petition with more than 67,000 signatures to support a ballot referendum questioning how 7 World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11.

The referendum titled "The High Rise Safety Initiative" would require the NYC Department of Buildings to investigate the causes of high-rise buildings collapses that occurred on, or any time after 9/11.

The investigation would exclude the collapse of World Trade Center 1 and 2.

7 World Trade Center was the last building to collapse on 9/11. The building sustained damage from the collapse of the North Tower and collapsed at approximately 5:20 p.m.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) conducted investigations on 7 World Trade Center and determined fire brought down the building.

NYC CAN disputes the reports because the destruction of the steel in the building’s cleanup caused NIST to rely on computer models. Also, NYC CAN claims experts disputed NIST’s findings, saying NIST omitted critical structural features from their models. The belief is a new investigation conducted by the city will address these claims and help better understand how 7 World Trade Center collapsed for safer building design in the future.

The City Council needs to verify the signatures and can reject the proposal by September 2, which would require the group to gather 15,000 more signatures by September 4 for approval.
