Residents surrounded by gun violence living in fear

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Residents in neighborhoods like Englewood live with the harsh reality of gun violence all around them.

More than 70 people were shot over the holiday weekend, and at least 16 died. A plague that has Chicago at the Tipping Point.

People living in these communities are living in fear every day. The gun violence impacts many on a daily basis. It’s not often talked about, but surely talked about.

FOX 32 News sought out to speak with people about the violence on Wednesday.

As we drove around the city of Chicago, we couldn't help but notice the people who are gathering at a memorial at 69th and Hamilton. Another shooting victim; red crime scene tape, unfortunately all too common in some parts of Chicago.

That victim was 19-year-old Jaynisha Schaffer. She was gunned down early Monday night while walking with friends.

A diary of messages was on the ground. The victim’s sister read some of the messages.

"Rest in peace best friend. I love you, I know you in a safe place, but I don't understand," she said.

Schaffer’s sister, Dominique tried to find comfort as she read the notes left for her sister.

The greatest concerns for many in the area, though, is the safety of their children.

"We've got to protect our kids. It's very dangerous out here," said Schaffer’s aunt, Sonia Wells.

Wells said some people are fearful of being outside because you never know what can happen.

"I feel like they need to bring in the National Guard, somebody to get this right. I mean, it's going to keep on happening if they don't," said Wells.

This family is not alone. Sixteen other people were killed in shootings over the Fourth of July weekend.

Schaffer’s family doesn’t understand why it’s happening and why the young illustrator had to be a victim, just days before her 20th birthday.

Many of the people we spoke with said they still love their communities. They add it’s frustrating to see the gang violence spill into innocent people’s homes as the senseless deaths continue.
