Monsoon's strong winds knock down trees

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - One area hardest hit by last night's monsoon storm was Sun Lakes.

The storm left behind a lot of damage.

"We heard it start to rain, went outside, and it was like being in the middle of a hurricane," said Norm Thorson.

Residents in Sun Lakes were out early this morning, surveying the damage from the storm.

"It just sounded like we were in a wind tunnel, you couldn't really see past our wall," said Beth Thorson.

High winds whipped through the area; tiles were blown off rooftops, and huge trees on the Cottonwood Country Club Golf Course were blown over.

Don Schriber says it was about 9:30 last night, he was inside when he heard two loud thuds on the roof.

"It's where the air conditioner is, I thought the wind lifted the air conditioner," said Schreiber.

The massive tree and branches from surrounding trees fell onto Schreiber's roof.

"Then when I came out to look I could see all the debris around and the fence down," he said.

Not only did this massive tree cause major damage to nearby homes, you can see the sidewalk buckled when it toppled over.

Elaine Johnston, an operations coordinator with the subdivision, drove around assessing damage, talking to residents and directing cleanup efforts.

"The house is ok, me and my wife are ok, that's what insurance is for," said Schreiber.

Residents were surprised at how powerful the storm was, and grateful that no one was hurt.
