Bar owner accused of sexually abusing a 20 year-old girl

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A Tempe bar owner is arrested, accused of sexually abusing a 20 year-old girl and videotaping it.

The arrest comes almost two years after police seized surveillance video and a computer at the bar.

Tempe Police waited for DNA test results to come back; it took almost two years, and no DNA was found on the victim. But police felt they had enough to make an arrest.

"Mr Johari, you've been charged with two counts of sex abuse, a class 5 felony," said a judge during his arraignment.

Bar owner Jay Johari was released from jail on electronic monitoring. Tempe Police arrested Johari after a 20 year-old job applicant accused him of sexually abusing her in October of 2012. It happened at Vintage Bar & Grill on Mill Avenue.

"It's not just good business practice if you ask me for one thing, another thing, it's not right," said Michael Johnson.

According to court records, Johari asked the applicant to change into a bikini and cocktail dress. She changed alone in the office but police say Johari didn't tell her there were cameras in there. Investigators say later that night Johari gave the underage girl alcohol until she fell asleep. She claimed when she woke up the bar was closed, and Johari was sexually abusing her.

"I worked security in bars since I was 19 years-old, you watch people like that, you don't let them run places," said Johnson.

Detectives served a search warrant at Vintage Bar and seized the main computer. Police say minutes before the search warrant was served; Johari deleted some video clips from the night the allegations were made. Johari denied touching the victim other than to wake her. Investigators say they found a video of Johari touching the victim over and under her dress.

Johari's attorney did not want to comment. Police say the investigation is ongoing and more arrests could be made.
