Road Construction: A necessary evil that must be done

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Construction season is in full swing around Chicago.

The Taste of Chicago has led to closures around Grant Park. And starting July 14th, the bridge from the Stevenson and Dan Ryan Expressways to Lake Shore Drive will experience some closures as well.

"It's a necessary evil," said driver, Penelope Simons.

In order to enjoy driving down a smooth road, it is a necessary evil that must be done: road construction.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is planning bridge repair work on I-55, the Stevenson Expressway, starting July 14th.

These closures will happen next Monday morning and last through Thursday morning.

"We have to maintain the roads, so there's no getting around that. There's a lot more cars on the roads. It creates damage," added Simons.

IDOT said this project is expected to be complete by November, which means there could be more occasional lane closures. So, drivers need to be prepared.

"It's tough for anybody that, when the roads are blocked off none of us can get through. But, it has to be done what can you say," another driver added.

Single lane ramp closures will then happen next Friday night through Monday morning. Traffic will be detoured, making it tough for drivers to get downtown.
