Family Of Drowning Victim Promotes Water Safety With Life Jacket Giveaway

Posted: Updated:

Clackamas County, OR-A year after her daughter drowned Brenda Doyle is doing everything she can to make sure no one else has to feel her pain.

It’s the time of year when the Clackamas River in Oregon is a popular destination.

“Meagan loved life and she loved to swim," said her mother, Brenda Doyle.

Floating in the river was one of Meagan O'Meara's favorite past times until July 5, 2013 when she drowned.

"And I miss her and I don't want anybody else to have to go through what my family has had to go through,” said Brenda.

That’s why her family and friends set up a tent at a local park.

Their mission? To give away about 150 life jackets to anyone who may need them.

"If we can save one life, it'll make our day," said her father, Rob O'Meara.

"Unfortunately, Meagan wasn't wearing a life jacket and she didn't realize the dangers underneath these waters,” said Brenda.

Authorities say Meagan jumped off a two-person raft to go swimming and she never came back up.

It was an area known as the "whirlpool," which is about 20 feet of swirling water that's extremely difficult to get out of. It took three days to find her body.

Her father says Meagan would appreciate their efforts to help others.

"She was full of joy, she loved to help people,” said Rob.
