Mother And Son Drive Into Sinkhole, Driven Over By Second Car

Posted: Updated:

KANE COUNTY, IL- A mother and son were delivering newspapers in Illinois, when they suddenly fell into a sinkhole.

San Juanita Pineda and her 15-year-old son Benjamin Hernandez, were driving on a remote road and didn't realize part of the road had been washed away by recent heavy storms.

Seconds after the duo fell into the hole, Pineda called 911, and while on the phone a second car drove over them.

The driver of the car immediately pulled over to help.

But Pineda's son suffered a fractured spine, broken ribs and jaw, and has lost several teeth from the accident.

The single mother of four is still trying to accept what happened to them.

Pineda says she plans to set up a fund at a local chase bank to help with her son's medical bills.

He is currently still under heavy sedation, and recovering at a local hospital.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
