Man accused of leaving infant inside 130 degree car

Posted: Updated:

A Connecticut man is accused of leaving his 6-month-old infant in a sweltering car that reached up to 130 degrees.

Brian Pavao, 33, allegedly left the baby in the car to go shopping.

The Groton man is accused of leaving an infant alone in an unlocked car in a New London Shoprite parking lot with three windows up and the fourth just open a crack.

Pavao reportedly told police he forgot the baby was in the car, because he was texting on his phone as he got out to go into the store. Someone spotted the child in the car and called police.

"It’s amazing that the baby is still alive and I'm so happy that it is alive," said Dr. Kelly Johnson-Arbor of Hartford Hospital.

On the sweltering summer day, toxicology expert Kelly Johnson-Arbor, says the problem wasn't just his decision to go shopping without the child.

"Children are more susceptible than adults to heat injury. their bodies are smaller, they can't dissipate heat as well as adults can and when you leave a child or even a pet in the car, the temperature in the car rises a lot in the first few minutes," she said.

In fact, investigators estimate that the car boiled up to 130 degrees.

They also believed Pavao left the 6-month-old in there for at least 30 minutes.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.

The Metro-North Railroad has sacrificed safety for on-time performance, according to a report released Wednesday by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority panel. The report echoes an assessment conducted this year by the Federal Railroad Administration, which investigated after a string of Metro-North accidents including a December 2013 derailment that killed four riders in the Bronx.
