CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A woman was fatally struck by a FedEx semi on the outbound Kennedy Expressway Wednesday night.

About 11:35 p.m., a woman ran out onto the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) at Addison Street and was struck by a FedEx truck, according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Henry Spight.

Spight said authorities did not know why she ran out into the road.

Hannah Strickland, 25, of the 0-100 block of Perch Street in Charleston, S.C., was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:03 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Though some northbound lanes were closed early Thursday, an ISP spokesman said all lanes had reopened as of 4:15 a.m.

The driver has not been cited or charged, ISP said Thursday morning.

“We can confirm a FedEx Custom Critical vehicle was involved in an accident this morning in which a pedestrian was fatally injured,” Bonnie Kourvelas, a spokesman for FedEx, said Thursday morning.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her family and friends. We are cooperating fully with local law enforcement in their investigation.”

Polluted Gowanus Canal doesn't scare away neighborhood development

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
