The Village of Marvin says it has two-key intersection problems.

Marvin is home to roughly 6,000 residents. New Town Road in Marvin sees around 12,000 vehicles each day. The intersections of New Town and Marvin Road, as well as Marvin School Road, are the problems.

Marvin says it receives calls each week complaining of traffic congestion, mostly during morning and evening commutes.

It has hired an off-duty officer to direct traffic, but it wants a long-term solution to traffic problems.

Marvin School Road has $500,000 in committed funding from Toll Brothers to realign it with Waxhaw Marvin Road at New Town Road, but says it needs more.

"We've been trying to secure funding from NCDOT for the past two years for a traffic signal and turn-lane improvements," Marvin administrator Lisa Thompson said. "We can't realign the road without the signal and turn-lane improvements."

Marvin is trying to construct a roundabout at the Marvin/New Town intersection. The two projects would cost an estimated $2 million.  It hopes to fund with state money, traffic-impact fees from incoming developers who will add to the congestion – and is willing to share a small percentage to get the projects on DOT’s list as “high priority.”

Marvin hopes construction can begin at Marvin School Road this spring but believes it is two-years away from the roundabout on Marvin.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
