Police: Driver in Minnesota Crash Runs Away, Leaving 2 Kids Behind

Posted: Updated:

St. Paul, MN-Minnesota Police have arrested a father who allegedly left the scene of an accident.

Police say the man crashed his van and then fled the scene.

But get this; he left his injured children behind.

Police say the 14-year-old girl suffered a broken neck, and the 8-year-old girl had a broken leg with a severed artery.

“I just heard a crash and a crunch and then ouch, ouch,” said witness Scott Hasselgrave.

Hasselgrave heard those screams from a block away and called police.

As help arrived he watched as two children 14 and 8 years old were taken out of the van.

“Tore out the backseats, pulled them off and hauled them out on stretchers,” said Hasselgrave.

But nowhere to be found was the driver, police, was the father of the children.

"It’s sick what's more important when it comes down to that there's only one thing that's important, and that's the kids,” said Hasselgrave.

Police are baffled as well.

"Sort of unbelievable at this point to comprehend or understand," said St. Paul Police Department Sgt. Paul Paulos.

According to police, 45-year-old Earl Ward is the father who left his kids injured with no help. They say around 3:30 this morning Ward was driving the van when he drove into an area of the street being fixed and the impact was severe..

"Enough force to throw them from the backseat to the front seat," said Sgt. Paulos.

So why did Ward allegedly leave his children and run? Only he knows. However, Ward has a warrant out for his arrest for domestic violence and he's got a long, long criminal history from fleeing police, criminal sexual conduct, drugs, and a whole lot more, police say.

"I think it's a sense of desperation that he cared about himself and not the children in the car," said Sgt. Paulos.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
