Paralympic Athlete Says His Racing Wheelchair Was Stolen

Posted: Updated:
Cincinnati, OH-There was a heartbreaking loss for an Paralympian over the weekend.

Phoenix native Erik Hightower was born with spina bifida and is confined to a wheelchair.

Hightower says his custom racing wheelchair was stolen from an Ohio hospital.

Hightower says the $5,000 wheelchair disappeared from a truck parked outside Anderson Hospital while he was visiting family, following a race in Indianapolis.

Now, he's just trying to get back what's so near and dear to his heart.

"I’m a Paralympic wheelchair racer. So we have events all over the U.S. All over the world,” said Hightower."I wanna keep racing I just broke a record. I wanna break more records, but without my chair I can't do that."

The athlete is praying the wheelchair is returned, and he doesn't plan on pressing any charges.

Hightower has since filed a report with the Hamilton County Sheriff's office.
