Groundbreaking for home for wounded warrior

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Sgt. Bryan Dilberian is an American hero. Three years ago an IED explosion in Afghanistan cost him both legs below the knee and his arm below the elbow. The explosion killed his best friend.

Dilberian knows just how lucky he is to be alive. The triple amputee hero said he has no regrets about serving our country in Afghanistan.

Two organizations broke ground Tuesday on a smart home for Dilberian to thank him for his sacrifice for our country.

The organization Building for America's Bravest raised money for the house it is building for him in the West Brighton section of Staten Island. The home will have high-tech features that can be operated with an iPad such as the heating system, window shades and blinds, lighting, and kitchen cabinets.

Building for America's Bravest is the combination of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which is named after a New York City fire fighter who was killed on 9/11, and the Gary Sinise Foundation, which the actor started to help military heroes such as Dilberian.

Woody Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets, donated $1 million to help build two of these homes.

Dilberian and his mother were overwhelmed.

Building for America's Bravest is building these homes all across the country for military servicemen and women injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One home was opened Monday in Atlanta to a triple amputee. And on July 4th the group is presenting another home in Pittsburgh.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
