Mexican helicopter opens fire on Border Patrol agents inside the United States

Posted: Updated:
There were shots fired at the border Thursday morning.

Mexican law enforcement reportedly fired two shots at Border Patrol agents from a helicopter on the Tohono O'Odham nation near San Miguel.

Officials have confirmed there were at least two and possibly up to four U.S. Border Patrol agents who were in their vehicles when the helicopter opened fire. They also confirmed the Mexican helicopter was in U.S. airspace.

A top union leader for the Border Patrol said that the agents were in marked vehicles when they were fired upon.

"These were fully marked vehicles, there was no mistaking that these were Border Patrol agents," said Art Del Cueto.

The section of the border where the shooting happened is on the Tohono O'Odham reservation. It's a known smuggling corridor.

The U.S. Border Patrol issued a statement, "A Mexican law enforcement helicopter crossed approximately 100 yards north into Arizona while on a law enforcement operation near the border. Two shots were fired from a helicopter, but no injuries or damage to U.S. property were reported. The incident is currently under investigation."

After the incident, the Mexican authorities apologized. "Which is just ridiculous to me, you know you shoot at our agents on our soil, on US soil, and I don't think oops I am sorry is the proper answer," said Del Cueto.

"I don't see how you make that mistake, first off to enter our airspace, and definitely not to shoot at our agents," he said.

The union rep also claimed that the next shift of Border Patrol agents were not informed about the incident. The Border Patrol says they are investigating.
