New Data Suggests 1 In 10 Adult Deaths Tied To Alcohol

Posted: Updated:

One in 10 deaths among working-age adults in the United States is due to excessive drinking.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scientists analyzed data on alcohol-related deaths caused by either disease, violence or motor vehicle accidents between 2006 and 2010.

They found excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths per year during that time period.

And nearly 70 percent of these deaths involved adults between the ages of 20 and 64.

The highest death rate due to excessive drinking on the state level was in New Mexico. The lowest was in New Jersey.

A CDC spokesperson says the findings show a need to enforce efforts as well as implement public health approaches to help reduce alcohol-related deaths.

The findings appear in the CDC's "Preventing Chronic Disease."

Dr. Mike Cirigliano joined "Good Day Philadelphia" on Friday morning to talk more about the study.

The doctor also discussed how having babies later in life can actually be healthy for women as well as the "Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention" he'll be taking part in Saturday night.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
