Here is why sunglasses make us feel cool

Here I am, just another regular reporter on another regular story. Then I put on sunglasses. Wait, but now who's that dark and mysterious correspondent with secrets to divulge?

New research out of the United Kingdom attempts to prove why we humans associate sunglasses with what we perceive as "cool."

"No one can see my eyes. That's why i feel so mysterious," one person told us.

Yes, hiding your eyes denies the outside world the chance to learn or assume anything from them. And according to a U.K. scientist, the curiosity and allure of hidden eyes draw us to someone wearing sunglasses.

Some of us might have good reason to hide behind a pair of shades. Evidently sunglasses also improve the appearance of your face by providing the symmetry we humans find physically attractive and which our facial structure may lack.

But it's not all sun and mirrors.

We find sunglasses cool because cool people wore them first.

Athletes on snow and water and pavement first donned sunglasses for functional purposes. And then in the 1950s and 1960s Hollywood stars and starlets picked up a pair of shades as a way to hide their identities.

And now on any street corner, as long as the sun's shining and often when it's not, one finds sunglasses hiding eyes, evening faces, and -- because apparently science tells us so -- just looking really cool.
