Credit card skimmer found on muni meters

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

We've heard about credit and debit card skimming at ATMs, MetroCard vending machines, retail stores, and restaurants. Now police are warning about a new twist on the latest target: muni meters.

You have the option to use quarters when you pay for city parking at a muni meter, and some people do. But many people don't want to carry $10 or more in quarters. It's so much easier to pay with a credit or debit card. And so much easier for the thieves who've attached skimming devices to steal your account number.

Police said muni meters along Kings Highway in Brooklyn have been especially hard hit, but it's a citywide problem.

You can protect yourself by checking your statement balance as often as possible and purchasing an NYC parking card to use at the muni meters instead of your debit or credit card.
