San Juan wildfire burning east of Show Low

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Another wildfire is burning in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest just east of Show Low.

The San Jan Fire burns in a popular area for camping and those taking day trips from the valley.

Fire officials estimated the size Thursday afternoon at 2000 acres.

Apache County Sheriff's spokesman Richard Guinn says more than 200 residents and tourists left the areas of Red Cabin Ranch, Greens Peak Hideaway and the Whiting Homestead by the time orders were issued Thursday night.

Guinn says a half dozen others remained but have since left.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter for evacuees at a middle school in Eager but nobody was there Thursday night.

Home video shows huge plumes of smoke towering above a mountain ridge. The San Juan Fire is being fueled by dry brush and fast moving winds as it burns through the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.

Incident commanders have ordered four hot shot crews to fight the fire on the ground as five air tankers fight it from the air.

"The winds will be an obstacle and in the next coming days, it's predicted we have strong winds in the area, possible red flags restrictions, as well the winds will be most important thing they are battling right now," said Pam Baltimore with the US Forest Service.

Vernon, Arizona resident Lisa Ashford is concerned the fire could change directions and head towards homes and businesses.

"So weird because you see smoke, then all of sudden just boom, these trees would just explode, that's when I got a little nervous," said Lisa Ashford.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
