CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Firefighters have called for a hazardous materials response as they fight a blaze at a business on the Northwest Side.

The fire in the 3300 block of West Montrose Avenue started sometime before 6:30 p.m., Fire Media Affairs said.

A hazardous materials response has been called, and crews are taking a defensive stance to fight the flames in the one-story commercial building, fire officials said. The structure is currently being rehabbed.

There was propane in the building at the time of the incident. As firefighters entered the building after arriving on scene, the explosion went off. No firefighters were injured though.

The fire department is calling the explosion a 'concussion blast.' That type of blast apparently doesn't hurt people, but it does buildings; which explains the amount of scattered broken glass at the scene.

No other injuries have been reported.

FOX 32's Lisa Chavarria contributed to this report.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
