Semi-truck driver found in burned wreckage of truck in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police are investigating after the body of a semi truck driver was found in the burned wreckage of a truck. Police are investigating if he was fatally shot before the truck was set on fire.

Investigators looked through the charred wreckage of the semi in a lot a McGraw and Junction street just after sunrise Thursday.

Overnight, it appears someone shot and killed the truck driver and set the vehicle on fire while the driver was waiting to pick up a load from the nearby ThyssenKrupp steel plant.

The victim was burned beyond recognition and police are working to identify him.

We're told the truck had Pennsylvania plates and we saw a Michigan map at the scene, indicating he may have been from out of state.

Police also found five spent shell casings. The medical examiner will make the final determination on whether the victim was shot before the fire.

Thursday afternoon police were back at the scene looking for a phone and other evidence. It appears the motive for this crime could be a robbery.

Fox 2 contacted the steel company but a spokesperson declined to comment. The apparent murder and arson took place just a few feet away away from the site of the original Kronk Gym run by the late Emmanuel Steward.

The building was shut down in 2006 and has since been gutted by scrappers. Anyone with information on what took place on this desolate corner in southwest Detroit should call police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.
