Swim safety tips on NYC pools opening day

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - New York City's 55 outdoor public pools opened on Friday.  Two million people are expected to take a dip this summer. Pools are open from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Before you head into the water, it's important to follow certain precautions to keep everyone - from young children to adults- safe.

Lori Rose Benson of the YMCA shared these key, life-saving tips:

Teach children to swim at a young age so they’re comfortable in the pool.

Adults should keep their eyes on their child at all times.

Always be within arms reach of your child.

Adult supervision is needed even if there is a life guard present.

As a child gets older, he or she should always swim with a buddy.

Adults should never swim alone; you never know when there could be a health episode and there’s no one there to help you.

Keep your cell phone close by and call 911 in the event of an emergency.

Self-flotation devices such as noodles and water wings provide a false sense of security.
