President Obama honored NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson and his Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 Team for their 2013 Sprint Cup Series championship.

"It's great to welcome back the six-time, NASCAR Sprint Champion, Mr. Jimmie Johnson," Obama said. "These days, we've got a whole lot of kids who want to be like Jimmie..and why shouldn't they? He's the only driver to make The Chase all ten years its been in existence."

Mr. Obama routinely honors athletes for achievement in their various sports, and their efforts to improve communities. He also mentioned his off-track work with Jimmie Johnson Foundation.

Since 2006, the Jimmie Johnson Foundation has donated almost $7 million dollars towards grants and resources to public schools and charities.

Earlier this year Johnson was presented with the key to the City of Charlotte and he will be honored similarly by his hometown of El Cajon, CA.

"I feel like I'm just a guy out there going in circles around the race track," Johnson said. "I've been so fortunate to have my passion turn into my career and have it lead to this great success in NASCAR. To be honored by El Cajon, where I live in Charlotte and then the ultimate, here in D.C. at the White House."

"It's hard to put it into words, but its mind blowing," he said. "It's really the wildest experience."

NASA is reviewing data from a rocket launch that tested a new sub-payload deployment method for suborbital rockets. NASA says a Black Brant IX suborbital rocket was launched at 5 a.m. Thursday from the agency's Wallops Island Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The new deployment method uses small rocket motors to eject sub-payloads from a rocket's main payload. Thursday's test included releasing vapor traces in space.
