Learning about sports from video games

MYFOXNY.COM -

Instead of taking to the field, many kids are learning about soccer, football and other sports through video games. So when and if they decide to play the real thing, they're already experts.

John Paul Castallanas has a kinship with the game of soccer. You can see it when he juggles. It's like he can control that ball to do whatever he wants. Kind of like when he controls the players during his other favorite activity: FIFA Soccer, a video game.

It is that video game that kids and kids at hear just can't seem to stop playing, especially now that the World Cup is underway.

We were lucky to get a peek inside the NYU Game Center Open Library, which has a collection of every gaming console and every game pretty much ever invented. Manager Grenna Forthamthraft says the sports games have a special place.

Frank Lutz, the director of the NYU Game Center, says those sports games specializing in football, basketball, and of course soccer are more than just graphics and joystick twirls but are teaching tools of sort about the sport and strategy involved.

Away from the virtual world and onto the real field, John Paul doesn't have much else to learn about this sport he'll play in college next year. But he says that for someone who is still learning the game, gaming isn't a bad way to start.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
